  1. WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 2 ???

  3. Version 2 of WinGuard has several features not present in
  4. Version 1:
  5.  
  6. 1.  V.2 lets you hide (and redisplay, of course) individual
  7. Program Manager groups.  This might perhaps be the most useful
  8. of the new V.2 features.  Besides allowing you to hide any of
  9. the regular groups of icons (such as Main, Accessories,
  10. Applications, etc.), it also gives you the chance to create a
  11. new hidden group just for your more "sensitive" icons:  Create
  12. a brand new group, drag and drop the icons you wish to protect
  13. into it, and then hide it (and them) by using WinGuard V.2.
  14.  
  15. 2.  V.2, like V.1, allows you to remove from Program Manager
  16. many "sensitive" icons (such as the ones for File Manager,
  17. Control Panel, System Editor, PIF Editor, and Windows Setup),
  18. while still giving you access to them from within WinGuard.
  19. However, V.2 now provides convenient pushbuttons (as well as
  20. V.1-style menu items) for these Windows programs, thus making
  21. for quicker and easier access.

  23. 3.  V.2 gives you the chance to hide (and redisplay) one or more
  24. of the icons that are in Control Panel's own window, without
  25. having to hide the main Control Panel icon, itself.  (V.2 also
  26. has pushbuttons for each of the twelve regular Control Panel
  27. functions, giving you quick access to even the hidden icons,
  28. without the necessity of redisplaying them.)

  30. 4.  V.2 lets you replace access to Task List (obtainable by
  31. double-clicking with the mouse on the desktop, or by using the
  32. Ctrl-Esc key combination) with quick access to WinGuard,
  33. instead.  (WinGuard will still provide both pushbutton and menu
  34. access to Task List from within itself.)  Furthermore, if you
  35. are using a third-party task manager replacement for Task List,
  36. you might (depending on its configuration) be able to hide all
  37. of its Windows-arranging and file functions within WinGuard.

  39. 5.  V.2 does all of its work in the Windows environment, unlike
  40. V.1 (which switched to DOS briefly for some of its functions).
  41. (This change is also true for the V.2 installation and
  42. uninstallation programs, as well.)
  43.  
  44. 6.  V.2 should be able to function well with many networked
  45. computer configurations, unlike V.1 (which worked only within
  46. the directory structure of a typical non-networked machine).
  47.  
  48. 7.  V.2 does not display the password as it is entered (unlike
  49. V.1), so that an onlooker will not be able to read what the
  50. password is.  (In addition, there is another new feature
  51. involving password entry that will not be stated here, for
  52. security reasons;  please refer to this section in winguard.wri
  53. for additional information.)

  55. 8.  V.2 uses a file to store the working password, as did V.1,
  56. but there have been two improvements involving the format of
  57. the password file itself which increase its security.  (For
  58. security reasons, these changes will not be spelled out here;
  59. please refer to this section in winguard.wri for additional
  60. information.)

  62. 9.  V.2 does not need to hide its files in a hidden directory,
  63. as did V.1.  Without sacrificing any security advantage, V.2 is
  64. able to function effectively yet unobtrusively in either the
  65. Windows directory or the Windows System directory.
  66.  
  67. 10.  V.2 is written in Visual Basic 3.0, and is a better overall
  68. program than was V.1.  However, V.2 does require the presence of
  69. vbrun300.dll in either the Windows directory or the Windows
  70. System directory, and it does use more memory than V.1.  Because
  71. of this, a PC with only 1 MB of total memory (with no extended
  72. memory) is not likely to be able to run WinGuard V.2, even
  73. though it may have (barely) run V.1.  (Note, of course, that
  74. WinGuard uses memory only when you actually run it, and that its
  75. protections require essentially no memory themselves.)

  77. As you can see, there have been quite a few improvements made in
  78. Version 2 of WinGuard.  Upgrading from Version 1 will provide
  79. previous users with more flexibility and more security than they
  80. had before.  However, despite all these changes, if you have
  81. been using V.1, do not panic;  you will find that the same
  82. protection level scheme is utilized in V.2.  Thus, if you have
  83. experimented a bit, and finally settled on one particular
  84. protection level setting for your computer(s), you will find
  85. that V.2's setting will have the exact same effect.  The only
  86. change that you will notice is that WinGuard V.2 lets you do so
  87. much more than V.1, so that you will probably end up doing a
  88. little more experimenting.
